Merit Based Scholarships

Merit based scholarships are usually awarded to students who have excelled in some aspect of their studies, whether it be academically, artistically, athletically or a combination of all three.

In order to qualify for academic merit based scholarships, you to ought to have received outstanding marks and be in at least the top 5% of your class for any given subject. Some of these scholarships will also require that your ACT or SAT scores are well within standards set by the institutions who distribute them.

It is important to mention that your best chance of attracting merit based scholarships is to actively seek out private organizations whose sole purpose is to find the best performing students in the country. You should do this because your own individual achievements can sometimes become lost among the vast number of students in the United States. Also, you may not meet the requirements set down for merit based scholarships at your given school or educational institution.

While there are some general rules governing the selection process, no two scholarships are the same. In fact they are as distinct as two people who are unrelated and have different talents and subsequent achievements. Merit based scholarships for Hispanics and high school seniors will obviously differ from merit based scholarships for college students in the same general discipline. As mentioned earlier, such differences will arise due to the sheer number of competing students and the particular, stringent criteria that all students must meet to be eligible.

For example, academic merit based scholarships are primarily intended for high school seniors who are fully intending to go on to further studies at a university. Such scholarships usually take care of your full tuition costs on a yearly basis but in some cases your academic results will be reviewed to ensure that the money is going to good use and not being wasted.

On the other hand, athletic and artistic merit based scholarships are slightly harder to successfully obtain because you have to be nominated first. You may have to be nominated by your coach; if for example, track and field is your specialty. Conversely, a professional in the art field may need to put your name forward if you enjoy some form of art. Even then, you will probably be required to submit a portfolio of your work for serious consideration.

Merit based scholarships are harder to obtain than other list of scholarships which are related to circumstance, race or location, but they are by no means impossible to get if you go about it the right way. It does not matter what your chosen area of expertise may be, there is a scholarship out there for you ready for the taking with a little bit of hard work and persistence.
